Fog.

These photographs were taken today by @MPSinthesky, the Twitter account managed by those flying London's police helicopters.  They do a very important job protecting our city, and they also get a great view, which they like to share!

The first picture shows the fog covering everything but the very centre of London, and the second one is of Canary Wharf, with the skyscraper buildings poking out above the fog!

The pictures really made my imagination start to race! Imagine if the fog was thicker? Imagine if it didn't go away? What if the fog started to creep into the buildings?  If anyone is reading The Magician's Nephew with Mr Wright, you may have read about a very thick, mysterious foggy light...

Imagine you are in the middle of this foggy city. Write a description of your surroundings. Think about what you can see and hear. How do you feel? Are there other people around you? Who might you meet there?

Let your imagination go for a wander into this strange new place!

I look forward to reading your contributions by Wednesday 18th December.

Finally, this picture of a London landmark was also taken by @MPSinthesky today too. Can you work out where it is?

Excuses, excuses...!

I have been so impressed with your recent blog entries Hyde Park!  It's absolutely wonderful to see how much effort you are making!

This week's blog entry is called 'Excuses, excuses...!'.

I would like you to think in a creative way about why you might not have done something.

You could write about why you were late for school, why you forgot your PE kit, or even why you couldn't write your blog entry!

For example, 'I didn't do my homework because an elephant strolled through my house and sucked the piece of paper I was working on up its trunk!'

However, I know you can be even more inventive than that!  How tall a tale (a 'tall tale' is a fib!) can you tell?

I look forward to reading your detailed, well planned and carefully written blog entries by Wednesday 11th December!

Happy writing!

It's (nearly...) Christmas!

Watch this video link.
It describes a journey in pictures.

The journey is long and hard, but it is important to the traveller.

I would like you to write a description of the journey.
Use your most carefully thought out sentences, with interesting, descriptive vocabulary.

You can write your entry on the blog or on paper.
I look forward to seeing them by Wednesday 4th December.

Happy writing!

Avenue of Trees

This beautiful picture is of part of Hyde Park during the autumn.

How would you describe it to someone who you were talking to on the telephone?
They cannot see it, so your description needs to be vivid!

Please put your entry up by Wednesday 27th November
You may write your blog response on paper and bring it into school by the same date if you prefer.

Making Electricity

During Science Week we explored electricity and found out about how it is generated.

This is one of the websites we thought was very useful:

Have another look, and see if you can write a paragraph explaining how electricity is made.

You could have a go at describing different methods if that's too easy!
How about hydro-electric power?  Or nuclear energy?

Please have your blog entries written by Wednesday 19th November!

A Victorian School Day

On Monday, you met Mr Wilberforce and experienced a day in a Victorian school room.

What do you think it would have been like to go to school in Victorian times?  Think about what children learned, what the punishments were like and how it might have felt.

You can look at this website if you want to find out more.

Imagine that you are a Victorian school child and write a recount of a day at school.  You could plan it using a skeleton (see last week’s blog post for help!).

Remember to ‘think’ and ‘say’ before you write!

I look forward to seeing your blog post before Wednesday 30th October!

A Perfect Day...

This picture looks like it might be somewhere I would have a Perfect Day!  A Perfect Day could be anything!  A trip out; a day with your friends; going to a party with your family; it’s something that makes you feel happy!

We have been finding out about diary entries, which are a type of recount.
Picture from displays.tpet.co.uk

This is the skeleton we have looked at, as well as the structure and language features we discussed too!

If you look at this website, you can find a whole diary to read online.  It might help you with some ideas:  Diary Link

I want you to picture your ‘Perfect Day’!  It could be a day which you imagine, or a day which you have really experienced.

Plan a diary entry for your ‘Perfect Day’ using the skeleton (we have used this skeleton before in class – remember, use it as a memory jogger to help you plan).

When you have planned it, write your diary entry as a reply on the blog.

Remember the non-negotiables!

  • Full stops and capital letters
  • Paragraphs
  • Interesting details for your audience
  • Past tense
  • Chronological order
Happy imagining!  I look forward to reading your blog posts before Wednesday 23rd October!

Sentence Magic

Shape

We have been investigating shape this week in Maths.

We have talked about the properties of different 2D and 3D shapes, as well as looking at paintings and sculptures which use shape.

Can you identify any 2D shapes in Paul Klee's painting?  Write about what you can see in full sentences.

Look at the pictures of everyday 3D shapes.

Can you remember the proper names for each shape? Write a couple of sentences to tell me about their properties.  Can you give me any examples of other 3D shapes we see in every day life?

This website has lots of 'polyhedra' for you to look at.

Polyhedra Link

Are all 3D shapes 'polyhedra'?

Remember to think your sentences through carefully!  Proof read before you post as well.

I would like you to respond by Wednesday 16th October!  Happy shape hunting!

Leif Ericson is a very famous Viking.

Can you remember what he is most well known for?

I would like you to research Leif Ericson and write a paragraph about him as a comment on this post.

Where did he come from?  What did he do?  Did he have any famous family members?

When you have done your research, you need to organise it into a clear, carefully written paragraph.

Remember spellings and punctuation are very important.  To practise your sentences, you can 'think, say, write'!

If you want to practise checking sentences, you could play the Sentence Doctor game first!

Please add your comment by Wednesday 9th October.  Remember to leave your name!

The Library

This weekend, Mrs Messa visited the library at Ham House.

It was first created in the late 1600s and it contains 2600 books.

Look at the pictures of the library at Ham House and the library at Chatsworth.  Our library was created in 2012.

Can you spot any similarities (things that are the same) or differences (things that are not the same)?

This is a world map.  Can you see Great Britain?

What do you think you would find in these books?

Write your comment below.  Remember - only leave your first name!

Read our blogging rules first to make sure you know what to do!
