Red Readers

Red Guided Reading Group!

I will be posting questions for you to discuss about your reading books.  I would also like you to ask each other questions about what you have been reading as well!  Talking about the books we read can be very enjoyable, and it helps us to be story detectives too!  Our friends sometimes spot things that we don't when we are reading.

Happy posting!

  1. You have the questions I asked you in your homework diaries, and we will discuss those when you come back after half term. During half term, have a look at a couple of these extra activities:

    Activity 1:

Imagine you are on a sailing trip round the world like Michael. You have just docked in a port after your first week and you promised your friends you would keep a blog!

Write your first entry in your blog. You might want to think of a title for your blog...

    Activity 2:

    The blurb...

'I heard the wind above me in the sails. I remember thinking, this is silly, you haven’t got your safety harness on, you haven’t got your lifejacket on. You shouldn’t be doing this. . . I was in the cold of the sea before I could even open my mouth to scream.'

Washed up on an island in the Pacific , Michael struggles to survive on his own.
With no food and no water, he curls up to die. When he wakes, there is a plate beside him of fish, of fruit, and a bowl of fresh water. He is not alone . . .

    What is a blurb?
    Why do books have blurbs?
What do you think makes an interesting blurb?

Re-write the blurb for Kensuke's Kingdom. It should be 2 or 3 sentences long.

  2. Saling Trip

Hi my name is Aleks. I was on a fantastic saling trip at the Atlantic ocean,I had my life jacket on and I was wearing short trousers a T-shirt and a addidas cap. It was superb(!),sunny weather but suddenly black clouds coverd me from the top. I felt frightening because I new there's going to be a storm! After few minutes my thoghts were right, there was a storm. I quickly put my mast down and put my valuble things into a golden box. I bended down so the lightning dosn't hit me but it didn't hit me it hit the boat. I jumped out with my box and I swam to the closest island. I climbed out and I found a man sitting on the floor he was called 'Kensuke'. We talked together and we be came friends.

    My brilliant first week!

When I was on my boat I was shocked to see how big and how many beds there were. The boat was so big it could fit about 10000 people on.One night I was up having so much fun. There was a big watch out I went there every day so I saw dolphins, that were so glamorous;penguins, that were walking really strangely; ships, that were huuuge and beaches that were really hot.

I was so excited to see the world and quite sad not to see you.I was a bit lonely.

    Activity 2
A blurb is a paragraph that tells you about the story.

Books have a blurb so the reader knows about the story and can decide if they want that book.

A blurb should always have powerful vocabulary,an exciting quote and an ellipsis at the end.

Michael and his dog Stella fall off their boat into a huge wave. When they get on an island,Michael is so scared. After surviving on his own, discovering talking orang - utans, and an old,Japanese man called Kensuke. Will he ever find his parents again?...

  5. We have now finished reading 'Kensuke's Kingdom'.

My question for you is this: is it a true story or not?

We discussed this as a group and you had some good ideas! Is there any evidence in the story which leads you to think one way or the other?

    Let me know! Mrs Messa!

I like to go on sailing trips around the world. I like to go on sailing trips around the world because I like to see different countries around the world and explore them. One day I went on a trip around the world. I went to France first. it was fabulous there. I went to Brazil it was too busy there. I went to Africa, a place called Cape Town.I went to two places in Australia. It was a stormy day. I got lost in the Pacific ocean. I found a little island named Kensuke's Kingdom

  7. 1. A blurb gives information about the book.People usually read it before they read the book.
    2. Books have blurbs because they make the book interesting.
    3. The key information and some interesting items makes the blurb interesting.

my blurb for kensuke's Kingdom :

I disappeared on the night before my twelfth birthday. July 28 1988. I lost in the Pacific ocean. I found an island.Someone was coming out of the trees, loaded wood up on my chin, when I realised there was much less smoke coming from the fire than before and no flames at all.I saw him and the Organ-Utan.He was crouching and I saw him scooping up the sand on my fire. His name was...

  8. This might have happened to Michael Morpurgo, but he has just changed the names and personality of people. Well there are talking orang-utans so it might not be true. Someone could have fallen off a boat in real life, and be washed up on a island that has nobody on. So it could be true.

So I think this book could be true and it could not be true.

  9. Hello Red Group!

We have started reading The Railway Children today. This book is known as a 'classic'. Can you think why it might be known this way?

    Task 1 (this week):
I have a few questions for you about the first chapter:

Where do you think the children live?
How would you describe their mother? And their father? Can you find words in the chapter to back up your description?

    Task 2 (this week):
Read to the end of Chapter 1. What do you think might have happened to Father? Write the next part of his story.

    Task 3 (next week):
Read to the end of Chapter 4. Imagine you are one of the three children. Write a letter to Father about your new life at Three Chimneys.

    Happy Reading!

  10. I think the book is classic because it is very old and well known. When you first open the book there is a page about E. Nesbit, she was born in 1858 and died in 1924.That is why i think it is classic.

Their mother is a very honest and positive person she always helps them and she is very sensitive .She's a very nice person as well.

    1. When Father left I think he went to the 1 World War.I think he went to the 1 World War because E.Nesbit lived through it. I also think he went to war because the rest of his family went to a cottage in the countryside.

  11. This book is classic because if you go to the first page it tells you about E.Nesbit she was born at 1858 and died at 1924.

They lived with their mother and father in a ordinary red-brick fronted villa, with coloured glass in the front door.

Mother was almost always there, ready to play with the children, and read to them and help them to do their home lessons. Besides this she used to write stories for them while they were at school, and read them aloud after tea,and always made up funny pieces of poetry for their birthdays and other great occasions, such as the christening of the new kittens,or the refurnishing of the doll's house,or the time getting over the mumps.

They also had a father who was just perfect-never cross never unjust, and always ready for a game.

I think the father is going on a mission. Near a railway station and he gets lost and meets mysterious people that he doesn't know.

  12. What I think might happen to farther!

I think that farther will have to stay on business for all his life and go to see his family for 1year only. That year eventually came, but because mother and the children had moved house farther couldn't find them. He spent all year looking for his family but he couldn't find them. Farther had to go back on business when he went back he tried not to look sad but everyone could see he was sad. One man asked why he was sad but he didn't tell anyone.

  13. The reason I think that this book is a classic is because it is a old and very popular. I think that the family live in the town because in the story it says "father has been in the country. I think that mother is kind and friendly because it says "She was almost always ready to play with her children.I think father is just perfect and in the book it said "father was never cross, never unjust and always ready for a game!

  14. Dear Farther,

We have moved house and we are not as rich as we used to be, the house is called "the three chimneys" it is right behind the railway station. We miss you as far up to the moon. Do you miss us as much as we miss you? Every time the 9.15 comes by we wave to a gentleman on the train and he is becoming our friend. We try to send our love to you, please can you tell us if our love is getting to you? Thank you! We are all wondering whether you are coming back or not, if you are please tell us this. We have all made these friends and these are there who they are (what jobs they do). Here they are:the station master, who is ok; the porter, who is quite kind and the gentleman, who is an excellent friend. Roberta had a brilliant birthday, we made a poem up and here it is:

    Our darling Roberta,
    No sorrow shall hurt her
    Her whole life long.
    Her birthday's our fête day,
We'll make it our great day,
    And give her our presents
    And sing her our song.
    May pleasures attend her
And may the Fates send her
    The happiest journey
    Along her life's way.
    With skies bright above her
And dear ones to love her!
    Dear Bob! Many happy
    Returns of the day!

    Love from
    Roberta,Peter, and Phyllis
