Shape

We have been investigating shape this week in Maths.

We have talked about the properties of different 2D and 3D shapes, as well as looking at paintings and sculptures which use shape.

Can you identify any 2D shapes in Paul Klee's painting?  Write about what you can see in full sentences.

Look at the pictures of everyday 3D shapes.

Can you remember the proper names for each shape? Write a couple of sentences to tell me about their properties.  Can you give me any examples of other 3D shapes we see in every day life?

This website has lots of 'polyhedra' for you to look at.

Polyhedra Link

Are all 3D shapes 'polyhedra'?

Remember to think your sentences through carefully!  Proof read before you post as well.

I would like you to respond by Wednesday 16th October!  Happy shape hunting!

Mrs Messa

  1. The picture has lots of squares, rectangles and triangles and the picture is actually a town with a Church and a house Mrs Messa. The trobleron box is shaped as a triangular prism, the pringles box is shaped as a cylinder and the football is shaped as a sphere Mrs Messa.

    1. I like your interpretation of the painting, Irfan.

  2. The shapes are all 2D which fill all the gaps . What I noticed about his paintings was that all his shape paintings filled all the gaps .

    1. What is the mathematical term for shapes which all fit together without leaving any gaps?

    3. Mrs Messa I think it's called tessalating isn't it?from Miralia

  3. In the big picture there are squares , rectangles and triangles. The toblerone is a triangular prism with two triangles at each end it also has 3 rectangles which has 6 vertices .A triangular prism has 5 faces. The Pringles are a cylinder with 2 circles at each end it also has 3 faces and 0 vertices. The football is a sphere with 1 face 0 vertices . It has 0 edges either .

    1. I agree Jack. Plus, You're description is VERY specific!

  4. The picture by Paul Klee has triangles, squares and rectangles, but I can see some circles, so she must have thought if a way to make a circle tessellate. The nike football is shaped as a sphere, The Pringles tube is shaped as a cylinder and lastly, the trobleron is probably a triangular prism.

  5. I really like the link to the website Mrs Messa, but to me some of the shapes don't make sense e.g: The Dodecadodecahedron and also The Biaugmented Truncated Cube.

    1. Why don't they make sense, Hira?

    2. I haven't seen many shapes that aren't a star but with star sides. But, they also look a bit amazing too.

    3. And also the Cube has ovals for the top, and i have never seen shapes with ovals in it unless it is a oval

  6. The Trobleron is a triangular prism. The Pringle box is a cylinder. The football is a sphere. Paul Klee used lots of shapes in his paintings. The shapes he used were squares, rectangles and triangles. Rectangles fit in well, they fill in all the gaps. I think Paul Klee is very clever to use shapes in his painting.I would love to have my painting in a museum.

    1. I'm pleased you're feeling so enthusiastic about spotting our mathematical shapes in his paintings!

    2. I would also like to have my painting in a museum! And I agree with you Leilani. But I have just spotted a oval in the painting too.

  7. Sorry to do this in a separate one, i just checked now, The Echidnahedron and The Hexakis Icosahedron are just amazing shapes!!!!

Do you know what it is named after? Can you think why?

  9. The picture by Paul Klee has triangles, squares , rectangles and they all fit together . He would not have put a circle there in the first place unless he decided to tessalate it . The nike football is definetly a sphere , the Pringles are cylinder and last of all the toblerone is a triangular prism . Anyway I agree with you Hira .

    2. In the way that Hira said , all the shapes that I saw were just the same as Hira so I decided that I agreed with her .

  10. In Paul Klee's picture, it showed two right-angled triangles, many equilateral's, rectangles, isosceles triangles and squares. The Toblerone cardboard box was a triangular prism, the Pringle packet was a cylinder and the socker ball was a sphere.

  11. The property's of a sphere is that it has one
face and zero corners. For my everyday life of 3D shapes are cube , a sphere ,a cuboid, a cylinder and any pyramid .I think all the
shapes are a polyhedra Mrs Messa.

  12. The football is a sphere. The painting by Paul Klee is full of shapes. It has loads of rectangles and less squares.

  13. We might not realize it but most everyday objects are shapes, most of my everyday objects are anyway ! E.G A dettatched house is a big cube and the roof is a square based pyramid stuck to the cube .

  14. The Echidnahedron is named after the animal called Echidna. It is looks like a hedgehog and is from Australia.

  15. Some of the properties of a cylinder are that it has 3 faces,0 vertices and 2 curved edges. Paul Klee's painting has triangles, square, rectangles and circles, but none of the shapes are 3D. I can see two shapes that look like circles but they are not.

  16. I can se triangels,squares,rectangels,circles.

  17. In Paul Klee's painting there were lots of shapes. Most of the shapes are regular but some are irregular , I think it's because he [Paul Klee] wanted to make it look unusual
so it would stand out .

    1. I think you might be right Quynh-Chau, but some painting's are unusual to us because we did not make it, But to them the painting looks awesome/perfect.

  19. The Toblerone on the blog is an equilactrial triangle prism

  21. In Paul Klee's paintings there are lots of equilateral triangles, scalene triangles, rectangles, quadrilaterals and circles. If you looked in the middle of Paul Klee's panting there is a house. The other objects the Toblerone pack looks like a prism outside. The pringles shape is a cylinder. The football shape is a sphere but it has a pentagon and a hexagon. In my daily life I play with lego and it looks like cubes and rectangles.

  22. In the center of the painting we can see a shape of a house, we see a square for a house with windows and a door,a triangle for a roof .I see a tree.
The Toblerone tablet is a triangular prism ,whith two triangles in each side and a large rectangle, only the bases are parallel.
The tube of crisps are two circles at each side and a large cylinder .
    The ball is an sphere.
All of them are 3D shapes pollyhedra

  23. Paul klee's painting has colour partterns orange, green, brown, yellow. It contains squares, rectangles, triangles. The tobelerone is prism shape with nine edges the colour is yellow with red writing on it. The pringles is a clyinder shape with no edges the colour is light blue, black, yellow. The football is a sphere shape it has pentagons, hexagons. In my daily life, I have seen a CPU that is shaped like a cuboid.
