  4. Most Egyptians lived near the River Nile because it provided water, food and transportation. Once, the Egyptians got scared that the Nile would fail on them and not flood, so they invented some gods and prayed to them. Then came alone some really clever people who came along and said, "Actually, we ARE the gods that you pray too! So feed us well, make us houses and we will look after you." Some time later these people got known as pharaohs.

The River Nile is in fact the longest river in the world and the River Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile has a length of about 6,695 km (aka, 4,160 miles). The Nile basin is really big and also includes parts of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Congo (Kinshasa) and also Kenya. The name 'Nile' comes from the Greek word “neilos”, and 'neilos' means valley. The Nile River flows north through Egypt and into the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient Egypt was divided into two regions, Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. This looks a bit confusing on a map because Upper Egypt is to the south and Lower Egypt is to the north. And this is because the names come from the flow of the R. Nile.

The cause of the flood each year was heavy rains and melting snow to the south near the source of the Nile. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the flood was caused by the tears of the goddess Isis as she cried for her dead husband Osiris.

  5. The River Nile is about 6,695 km in length, plus it is the longest river in Africa and in the world! The river begins in the mountains of Africa, then flows north to the Mediterranean Sea. It was by the banks that one of the oldest civilizations in the world began …the ancient Egyptians. They lived and farmed along the Nile, using the soil to produce food for themselves and their animals.

Interestingly, ancient Egypt could not have existed without the river Nile. Since rainfall is almost non-existent in Egypt, the floods provided the only source of moisture to sustain crops. Every year, heavy summer rain in the Ethiopian highlands, sent lots of water that overflowed the banks of the Nile. When the floods went down it left rich mud, which was excellent soil to plant seeds in after it had been cultivated. The ancient Egyptians could only grow crops in the mud left behind when the Nile flooded, so they had fields along the River Nile.

  7. The River Nile was very important to the ancient Egyptians because this was their only source of water as it rarely rained in Egypt. When it did rain flooding occurred which made the soil surrounding the River Nile rich in nutrients. This helped the Egyptian to live as they planted crops which could feed their families and animals. Their only other way of getting water was to extract cactus juice from the plant in the dessert. In modern day Egypt, the River Nile is mostly used for tourism.

It no longer floods because a vast dam was built in 1971.
Reeds, called papyrus, grew alongside the Nile and were used to make paper and boats from the reeds.

  13. The river Nile was important to the Egyptians because it was their only source of water. The floods in Egypt were caused by the ice on top of the mountains. When the ice melted it flowed down the mountains and into the river which rose and flooded the land near the river Nile.

The egyptians grew crops and papyrus on the wet land and they caught fish in the river using nets and spears.
